HEPHZIBAH, GA (WFXG) -

Three burglary suspects are in custody after a chase Friday afternoon put a Hephzibah school on lockdown.

Jakota Little, 28, David Corey Lawrence, 29, and Dechan Antonio Newton, 24, were arrested near Hephzibah High School, according to the Richmond County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies responded to an attempted burglary in progress just after 1 p.m. at 5178 Henderson Road, and learned that three people had fled the scene in a blue Toyota Corolla.

Deputies spotted the vehicle and started pursuing it, according to the sheriff's office. The suspects abandoned the vehicle on Brothersville Road and ran inside Hephzibah High School in an attempt to get away.

The high school and surrounding schools were placed on lockdown, according to the sheriff's office. Deputies caught two of the suspects, Lawrence and Newton, right away.

The third suspect, Little, got back in the Toyota Corolla, and a second short pursuit ensued. Deputies caught Little after he crashed the car at Hwy 88 and Jones Street.

Deputies said the three suspects are linked to two other burglaries in the neighborhood.

Each of the suspects is charged with one count of criminal attempt burglary, two counts of burglary, one count of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

No students or faculty were injured during the lockdown.
