AUGUSTA, GA (WFXG) - Jade Fielding loves to cook.
"I think cooking is pretty cool," Fielding said.
The sophomore at Richmond County Technical Career Magnet School and her classmates peeled sweet potatoes, Tuesday afternoon.
"Right now we're peeling sweet potatoes. He has five baskets and that's what we've been doing for the whole class," said Fielding.
But these sweet potatoes aren't just for today's lesson. These students have been working diligently this week to prepare food that will feed about 5000 people at the annual Feast Before the Feast.
"We were asked, last year, to help, whenever it was coming back around this year," said Craig Oglesby, the culinary arts instructor at TCM. "We thought we could help out with some of the work load and give the students some of the experience in mass producing."
The feast before the feast is in its 6th years and organizer Monique Braswell said the students at TCM are providing a big help.
"We have children who have been serving for the six years we've been doing it, children who come out and eat and now this year, we're bringing something new to the table, children who are actually preparing a large part of this meal," Braswell said.
And it's something the high schoolers say they don't take lightly.
"This is an awesome thing to actually be helping other people," Fielding said.
"It feels really good. I'm helping people out. I'm helping others out," said Javonna Williamson, a freshman at TCM, who is also part of the culinary arts class.
