FLORENCE, AZ (CBS5) -

Pinal County deputies said a 32-year-old man from Mexico stopped on Interstate 10 tried to run over a deputy who was reaching through the car window for identification Sunday night.

The man was driving a 2001 Mazda Tribute when deputies pulled him over for a traffic violation about 8 p.m., according to a Pinal County Sheriff's Office news release.

As the deputy was reached into the SUV through the window to get the identification of the passenger, the driver accelerated, nearly running over the deputy, according to the release.

The deputy ran back to his vehicle and gave chase into the desert. The vehicle stopped and the driver and passenger ran further into the desert, according to the release.

The driver, identified as Christian Lopez-Montiel, was tracked down by a K-9 deputy in a thick tree line in the desert, according to the release.

The sheriff's office did not say whether the passenger was captured.

Lopez-Montiel was booked into the Pinal County Jail for aggravated assault on a police officer, unlawful flight and possession of marijuana after a baggie of pot was found in the car.

Deputies said Lopez-Montiel was on probation for human smuggling.

The vehicle was seized and towed to the county impound lot, according to the release.
