Cheetah cubs get 6-week check-up at Metro Richmond Zoo

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

The now famous cheetah cubs at the Metro Richmond Zoo got a live 6-week-check-up Monday morning- and all five were reported perfectly healthy.

The cubs have hundreds of thousands of fans world-wide on the now popular cheetah-cam.

In the last few weeks, the cubs have grown a little bit more feisty. It was a game of catch the cheetah for the team at the Metro Richmond Zoo, as the cheetahs dodged them and squealed through the check-up.

They're growing up- finding their voices and their claws.

"The last few times we put them in a box and they kept jumping out so we figured we would get a top this time because they're so active," explained Jim Andelin with the Metro Richmond Zoo.

The cubs each weigh about 6 pounds and they're growing fast. One reason, say they experts, they've upgraded from nursing to eating meat, too.

"We put it on a flat pie tin or a cookie sheet and we spread it out and the cubs are just now starting to put it in their mouths and spitting it out and eating," explained Andelin.

The cheetah cubs have been big business for the zoo, too.

"People love to come and see and pet the giraffes which is a huge thing here," said Andelin. "But I think as far as the publicity, it's definitely spread all over about the cheetahs."

There's a new cheetah wall in eh gift shop and patrons are constantly calling to se if the cubs are on display. Andelin says it shouldn't be much longer. They'll see if the cubs are ready in the next few months. Until then, you'll have to watch them online.
