Buckeye girl, 16, arrested in connection with Amber Alert

BUCKEYE, AZ (CBS5) -

Authorities have canceled an Amber Alert after two Buckeye siblings believed to be with a reportedly suicidal 16-year-old babysitter were returned home safe early Sunday morning.

Police said while the mother of the 8-year-old and 1-year-old sister was gone, the sibling teenager, who is reportedly an unlicensed and inexperienced driver, stole her mother's vehicle with the children in tow.

Maricopa County sheriff's deputies learned that the suspect had threatened to harm herself on previous occasions and was known to become easily irritated by the actions of her 1-year-old sister.

Authorities said 16-year-old Shilate Mesquita returned to the home some time later with her younger sisters unharmed, MCSOsaid.

The victims were identified as Mariela A. Cheno, 1, and Sophia Mesquita, 8.

Sheriff's detectives arrived on the scene and took the teen into custody.

Mesquita threatened suicide last month and is on medications for depression. The teen allegedly stopped taking the medications two days ago.
