WILMINGTON, NC (WECT)-  The "Stop the Hunger" campaign took the campus of UNCW by storm Saturday.

Hundreds of people poured into the Hanover Gymnasium to help bag and box rice to send overseas.

The event featured volunteers from local civic groups, churches, and the UNCW student body.

"I think this really gives people a chance to have a direct impact," said Bill Anlyan who oversaw the event. "I mean actually what they're doing here, is they are packaging food that's going to go into a shipping container and will be sent to an area and there will be people there who will benefit from this immensely."

Anlyan said that volunteers at the event are also collecting canned goods for the food bank and donations for a Philippines relief fund.
