High 5: 12 men to be honored Saturday

(WMC-TV) - Action News 5 is giving seven honorees of the 2013 African American Male Image Awards and five scholarship recipients a high 5 Saturday.

These honorees will be highlighted during a special banquet at 6 p.m. Some of the selected men represent the categories of education, business, religion, or community service.

The banquet also raises scholarship money to support high school seniors who are college-bound, African-American, and male.

The honorees are as follows:

  • Education – Bobby White, the founder and CEO of Frayser Community Schools
  • Business – Charles Sims Jr. President of The Sims Financial Group, Inc.
  • Religion – Milton Hawkins, Pastor of the Temple of Deliverance Church of God in Christ
  • Community Service – Van Turner, Attorney at Bruce Turner, PLLC;
  • Corporate – Shannon Brown, Senior Vice President of FedEx Corp.
  • Arts – Bernal E. Smith II, President and Publisher of The New Tri-State Defender.

Five young men are scheduled to receive a $1,000 scholarship for college at this event.

    According to investigators, twenty-three-year-old Abbi Nicole Broome was involved in an altercation on the 1900 block of Warren Street in Augusta at around 10:50 a.m. Monday morning. A preliminary investigation found that Broome stabbed another individual at least once in the chest.
