Longtime business owner relocates to Dexter Avenue
David Gulino points out what his storefront will look like on Dexter Avenue.
MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -
Just when you thought there was no activity on Lower Dexter Avenue -- think again.
If you have driven down the historic street the last couple days you've seen construction crews tearing up the sidewalks and existing trees.
It's all part of a multi-million dollar street renovation, and it's not the only renovation taking place.
"The new storefront on both sides will be display cases," David Gulino said.
Gulino is the owner of longtime Montgomery business Charlie's Trophies. The business has been in Montgomery for nearly 38 years.
Right now the store is located just off Coliseum Boulevard near Atlanta Highway, but it started downtown.
"It was originally near Cramton Bowl, so not far from here. So we're looking forward to coming back downtown," Gulino said.
But the store isn't the only thing relocating -- so is Gulino's family.
"We'll move here. What we planned for the living space is four bedrooms and three and a half bathrooms," Gulino said.
The city's plan to build new sidewalks, plant new trees and install new light posts couldn't come at a better time as Gulino invests his life on the street.
"This renovation is our legacy to the city of Montgomery and we're excited to be a part of this and it's an opportunity and a privilege to be able to come to downtown Montgomery and be part of this revitalization," Gulino said.
It will only take a few months for crews to finish the streetscape right in front of Gulino's new business. City leaders expect the entire project to last one year. The city's project has been in the works for six years. It will cost more than $5.5 million dollars.
