PHOENIX (CBS5) -
A high-speed chase ended in a residential subdivision in the West Valley on Wednesday with the suspect bailing from a stolen car before he was taken into custody.
The chase began shortly after 9:20 a.m. near 101st and Glendale avenues with a report of a home burglary. The suspect, later identified as Austin Straps, blew through intersections and passed cars in all lanes, along dirt shoulders and even on sidewalks and grassy areas.
Straps, 19, lives in Casa Grande and had just gotten off parole five days before Wednesday's chase and served time in prison for burglary, according to court documents.
After leading police on a more than hour-long chase through Phoenix, Goodyear, Avondale, Surprise, Sun City and Peoria, the chase came to an end outside a house in a residential Peoria neighborhood.
"I think it's pretty crazy because it's such a quiet and brand new neighborhood. You don't expect these kind of things to happen," Annalee Reyes said.
The stolen BMW smacked into a curb, breaking an axle and disabling the front left tire. The suspect got out and tried to run away, holding onto his pants to keep them up and losing his shoes as he ran.
He tried to get inside the house but before he makes it, police drew their guns and took him into custody near 107th Avenue and just north of West Happy Valley Parkway about 10:50 a.m.
Jim Frost saw police arrest the suspect in his neighborhood.
"A car came skidding around the corner and his tire almost shredded off. I say, 'Oh, that's bad.' So I knocked on the doors and yelled at my poor neighbor to get back in the house, and just stood outside to make sure he didn't come up our street or anything," Frost said.
The chase started a home burglary and car theft at a North Phoenix home.
An Arizona Department of Public Safety spokesman said the car was tracked through its GPS system.
The chase wound through different areas in a wide swath through the West Valley and involved numerous law enforcement agencies, said Phoenix police Sgt. Tommy Thompson.
The chase went through residential and industrial areas, farmland and roads near Luke Air Force Base. The car was also seen speeding past golf cars in the retirement community of Sun City and Sun City West. The suspect also drove through a Home Depot parking lot near Bell and Litchfield roads. He was the only occupant, Thompson said.
No one was reportedly hurt in the incident.
Straps is being held at Fourth Avenue Jail. The 19-year-old has a lengthy criminal history and now faces several felony charges including vehicle theft, aggravated assault and reckless driving.
