MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

We've all seen the signs at one time or another in a store warning, "If you break it, you've bought it?" This past weekend a circuit court judge ordered Harvey Updyke to pay for the oak trees at Toomer's Corner he "broke" to the tune of $796,731.98, plus legal fees and court costs. That pushes the grand total north of $815,000.

The judge is allowing Updyke to pay the restitution in $500 monthly installments.

Auburn University unveiled a new design for the area earlier in the year where the old trees once stood that retains the basic configuration of the 1917 gateway into the campus framed by two replacement oak trees.

The price tag for this momentary lapse in judgment by Updyke is high, but as high was the value placed on the tradition of "rolling" the now removed oaks after football games.  Those memories and these traditions are priceless whether it's at Auburn or any other university, and no one has the right to take them away. We hope this fan has certainly learned his lesson.

With this judgment we can finally close the book on this saga and get back to the important things in life like… who's going to win the Iron Bowl?  Best of luck to both teams!
