Consider flu shot now if traveling for Thanksgiving

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

Those who are traveling for Thanksgiving this year may want to get a flu vaccine now.

Whether you're flying, driving or just having company over, you will likely run into someone who's feeling under the weather.

And when it comes to protecting yourself, here's something you may not know. It takes about two weeks for the flu vaccine to kick in, so keep in mind Thanksgiving is two weeks from Thursday.

We talked with a doctor at Tri-Star Centennial Women's and Children's Hospital, who recommends getting the shot early so your body is ready to fight off sickness.

"So if you're going on a plane, you're traveling around, you're going to be exposed to lots of people who may be sick or are in the very beginning stages of their sickness and don't even know they are contagious, so it's very important to get those vaccines prior to your holiday travel," said Dr. Deanna Bell.
