HOLLYWOOD, SC (WCSC) -

More than 16,000 spectators made their way out for the 20th running the Charleston Cup Sunday.

Fans cheered for their favorite horses at The Plantation at Stono Ferry in Hollywood.

The attention quickly turned from the horse races, to a marriage proposal in the middle of the race track at the Cup.

Lauren Nantista, bride-to-be said, "Oh my gosh this is crazy. This is my favorite event."

"This was kind of our first meet up we had last year here at the Charleston Cup," said future groom Brandon Collins.

The newly engaged couple says their visit to the Cup this year is definitely one to remember.

Everyone dressed up in their best southern attire and some even gave their pets a makeover fitting for the occasion. But there was one accessory that was more popular than any other.

Carol Williams placed third in the hat competition.

Williams said, "This hat has beautiful netting with a bird motif."

Hats were everywhere and a creative hand helped make the one that won the competition.

Beth Meredith wore the winning hat and said, "Susan Marlowe made the hat and we actually took a dress that I had and the colors that we wanted and Susan made the hat."

As the horses cleared hurdles on the track, many spectators also took part in betting on their favorites.

Thoroughbreds in this race are at least three years old and jockeys are taller than those who do races without jumps. It helps them get a better hold on the horse when jumping through the air.

From the hats, to the races and the games, the elaborate tailgates were more than enough to keep everyone busy in-between races and there definitely wasn't a shortage on food.

Allison Kaushagen and her family have come out to the Charleston Cup for all 20 years of the steeplechase racing.

Kaushagen said, "It's tradition, it's like Thanksgiving."

The winner of the races took home a grand total of $50,000.
