Autopsy performed on fallen runner's body

Posted: Updated:

An autopsy of the 35-year-old Columbia man that died just feet from the Rock n' Roll Savannah Marathon finish line was peformed on Sunday.

The Chatham County Coroner oversaw the autopsy today so the runner's body could be released to a South Carolina Funeral home.

The man identified as Jake Zeman would have been 36 years old Sunday. The autopsy originally was not going to be performed until Tuesday, something Zeman's family was reportedly upset about. The state of Georgia usually does not do autopsies on Sunday, and Monday is a holiday.

The runner, father of a 2-year-old, died Saturday morning.

Richland County Coroner Gary Watts said the holdup was not with the Chatham County coroner's office, but with the office of the Georgia Chief Medical Examiner with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation in Atlanta. Unlike South Carolina, coroners in Georgia work for the state, and they are governed by the state medical examiner's office.

More than 15,000 runners participated in the Savannah marathon, which was the city's third annual such run. According to Savannah Chatham Metro Police, the Columbia runner collapsed as he neared the finish line and was pronounced dead in a local hospital.
