Indian Festival teaches history lessons outside the classroom

AUGUSTA, GA (WFXG) -

Phinizy Swamp Nature Park hosted the Oka' Chaffa Indian Festival Saturday, November 10th and Sunday November 11th. The festival featured and crafts and lots of good food.

But for Vicky Moore, the festival was more than just entertainment. For her niece, it was a history lesson outside of the classroom.

Moore said, "I want her to know how they lived, survived and ate."

Native American tools, homes, food and even a buffalo were all on display.

President of the South Eastern Natural Sciences Academy Bob Young said they hope educating people like Moore's niece will help keep the swamp up and running.

Young said, "We've got our scientists out here showing people how the work we do benefits the people in Augusta."

Young says the academy runs the Nature Park and fresh water research. Those are both things the festival will help fund, but they said their only goal was to educate.

Veterans and active duty military were given free admission, in honor of Veteran's Day Monday.
