SURFSIDE BEACH, SC (WMBF) – Horry County Fire Rescue and the South Carolina Highway Patrol worked the scene of a crash on Highway 544 Sunday that stopped beach bound traffic for nearly half a mile.

Witnesses on the scene said a jeep appeared to be swerving on the road, and a woman driving a moped went to pass the jeep when it struck her near Southwood Drive. The jeep caught fire.

The driver of the jeep, Valerie Bell, 30 from Myrtle Beach, was driving the jeep according to Lance Corporal Judd Jones with the SCHP. She is charged with felony DUI. There was a passenger in her vehicle, and neither of them received injuries from the collision.

The witnesses said the victim's leg was badly injured but her injuries did not appear life-threatening. Lance Corporal Jones said the driver of the moped was transported to the hospital with serious injuries.

The accident is under investigation by the SCHP.
