VA hospital says Veteran's Day brings up good, bad memories for many service members

AUGUSTA, GA (WFXG) -

The Charlie Norwood VA Medical Center is ready for Veteran's Day.

Psychologist Lorraine Braswell said," Veteran's Day truly is about everyone serving and the people whom with they served. Almost every veteran speaks of camaraderie."

Good memories, but not always. Braswell said it can be a dark day for some already struggling off the battle field.

"Many of the memories are very positive, but they can include loss, sadness and disability; those things that naturally bring up a lot of feelings and sometimes remembrance of trauma."

Braswell said there's help, though. Family and friends just have to know what to look for.

"One of the things you might see is shutting down, drinking too much, being more irritable and angry. Those are the things to attend to."

Braswell said if you're a veteran and need help, call the crisis line number at 1-800-273-8255 anytime of the day and someone will answer the call.
