Parents concerned about redistricting

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Parents in West Chatham fear their students will have to move schools because of overcrowding. This comes after the Savannah-Chatham School System wants to redistrict some students in the Godley Station and Port Wentworth area.

Rita Andrae says she can't bear the thought of her 5th grader having to move schools.

SCPSS leaders are considering a proposal that would move some students at Godley Station to a new school that is being built in Port Wentworth.

The school system says they did not anticipate the rapid growth rate in the Pooler area.

Andrae says Godley Station School was built to support the students that live at Godley Station. She says her son already had to move from Pooler Elementary School and she doesn't want him to have to move again.

"Well I think the overpopulation really came from the Port Wentworth area," said Andrae. "I feel like they need to focus on that and try to be proactive in that and possibly a school for them or relocation."

Before they make their decision, school board members want to hear from parents like Andrae.

They're holding public hearings:

Nov. 18 at Godley Station from 6-8

Nov. 19 at Port Wentworth Elementary from 6-8

Nov. 21 at Mercer from 6-8
