Inmates earn GEDs

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Some Dougherty County Jail inmates celebrated a graduation Wednesday afternoon. Three young men earned their GED after completing their course work inside the jail.

Cameron Cox, James Tanner Junior and Ryan Pittmon received their certificates as their family and jail employees cheered for them.

Pittmon is out of jail, but returned for the ceremony. Tanner was joined by his brother Dontavius Calloway, who earned his GED in May at the jail.

They are the first of 15 siblings in their family to earn their GED.

"That's my little brother. I'm the big brother. He got his first so he motivated me to get mine," said James Tanner, Jr.

What are they hoping to do now? "Get out. Move forward on our futures," said Dontavious Callaway.

The GED program at the Dougherty County jail is paid for completely by donations.
