Third quarter Columbus crime report sees rise in burglaries since 2012

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

According to the third quarter crime report released by Columbus Consolidated Government on Wednesday, Nov. 6, Columbus has seen an increase in reported crime since the same time last year, but the crime rate is still 6.5 percent below the 6-year average.

The report states there were a total of 16 homicides, 28 rapes, 324 robberies, 384 cases of Aggravated Assault, 2,400 Burglaries, 5,797 Larcenies, and 768 Motor Vehicle Thefts for a total of 9,717 crimes reported in Columbus for the first three quarters of 2013.

"Though we experience periodic flare-ups of burglaries and auto ‘smash and grabs', we appear to be fairly stable in our Part-1 Crime reports again this quarter," says Mayor and Public Safety Director Teresa Tomlinson.  "Statistics don't matter, though, when the crime happened to you. We are thankful for our professional law enforcement officers who fight this crime every day."

The number of burglary cases of in Columbus saw the biggest jump between 2012 and 2013, rising to 2,400 from 1,919 at the same time last year.

Columbus Police Chief Rick Boren says, "Since 2010, we have seen similar crime rates in Part-1 Crime levels. Now, we are looking to improve on these numbers, and reduce the number of burglaries that cause such concern on the part of our citizens."

The seven tracked crime categories of Part 1 Crimes are recorded in the Uniform Crime Report (UCR) and published by the Federal Bureau of Investigations. UCR is a nationwide, cooperative statistical effort of over 18,000 jurisdictions, which voluntarily reports data on crimes brought to its attention.
