HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) – The Highway 501 Southbound expansion project that needed funding has been pushed up, and residents have a chance to voice opinions on what other roads need to be worked on at a meeting Tuesday.
Because Carolina Forest residents have filed their comments, plans can move forward to widen the southbound lanes of Highway 501. Even though construction has started to widen the northbound lanes, SCDOT still needs to fund the $7 million work to help traffic going to the beach from Gardner Lacy road to Highway 31.
Now the project could get all the money it needs through federal funding from the Grand Strand Area Transportation Study Committee. Once it gets final approval, preliminary work on the southbound section of the expansion project is expected begin in 2016.
Highway 501 won't be the only highway that will get funding, as the committee is drafting a funding list of area roadways that need improvements over the next five years, and residents have a say on what other projects will be pushed up. This will be for road projects like improvements to Kings Highway in Myrtle Beach, or work on Highway 9 in North Myrtle Beach.
The list is currently in the public comment period, and those working with the list tell WMBF News they make changes to the plan based on the type of comments they receive from residents and drivers. The final meeting to receive public comments will be on Tuesday, and begins at 11 a.m. at Myrtle Beach City Hall. Residents can also send in written comments through November 21st.
