ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Dougherty County leaders will pay an additional $140,000 for a joint sewage extension project with the city of Albany.

The actual cost will be about 73-percent more than initial estimates.  Monday, commissioners approved the money for sewer improvements at the Parks at Chehaw.

Leaders said available SPLOST revenue helped pay the difference on the project that will support future residential and commercial development along Philema Road.

"The money was there, it was available.  The project is a good project.  We were able to manage this without any undue burden on the county," said Vice Chair Gloria Gaines, Dougherty County Board of Commissioners.

Commissioner Gaines said she's not sure when work will begin, but she said the needs at Chehaw Park could expedite construction.
