Some residents eligible for home heating help as temperatures dip

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

As the temperatures continue to dip and winter approaches, Georgia's Department of Human Services is preparing to help those in need with the cost of heating.

Beginning November 1st, residents age 65 and older who are in long-term care at home can apply for assistance through the Department's Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP).

Officials say all other eligible families may apply for assistance beginning December 1st.

The federally-funded program assists low-income, elderly and disabled Georgians with heating bills through direct payments to home energy suppliers. Funds are administered through area community action agencies.

To qualify, a family's annual income must be less than or equal to 60 percent of the median income for a Georgia family. For a household of one, the income threshold is $21,029; the income threshold for a household of five is $46,912.

For more information on the program, contact DHS, Division of Family and Children Services, LIHEAP/CSBG Programs toll free at 1-877-423-4746. To find the Community Action Agency in your area, visit www.georgiacaa.org
