Man charged in hit-and-run that killed 2 people

AUGUSTA, GA (WFXG) - A 25-year-old man is facing charges in a hit-and-run that killed two people over the weekend, according to the Richmond County Sheriff's Office.

Derrick L. Thompkins is charged with hitting and killing 58-year-old Jerry Mims and 44-year-old Tonya Lane Friday night in the 2200 block of White Road, according to the sheriff's office.

Thompkins is charged with two felony counts of homicide in the first degree, two felony counts of hit-and-run and one misdemeanor count of driving with a suspended license, Sgt. Michael McDaniel said.

Deputies said Tuesday that they were looking for Thompkins as a person of interest in the case. Thompkins later turned himself in, deputies said.

He is being held at the Richmond County Jail.
