State AG looking into HS band alleged 'financial improprieties'

CHANDLER, AZ (CBS5) -

Are leaders of the Hamilton High band using parents donations the way they should? The state Attorney General's office appears to be looking into that.

"The former band booster president made a complaint to the AG's office," explained Hamilton High principal Dr. Fred DePrez.

CBS 5 obtained a copy of a request from the AG sent to the Chandler Unified School District. It requested a host of documents relating to fees, extracurricular activity tax credit donations and possible conflicts of interest for the past two school years.

"Nobody is accusing anybody of stealing funds or anything like that," DePrez explained.

He said some parents like to specifically choose where there donations go and then, "some are made undesignated," DePrez added.

DePrez thinks the complaint is the result of a disagreement between the former band booster president and the current band director over using some tax donation funds for band students to travel to Ireland in 2012 instead of using the funds to pay for band camp at Northern Arizona University in August of that year.

"Some undesignated money went to Ireland. The band boosters wanted it to go to band camp," DePrez said.

But again, he says this was a difference of opinion and nothing more. He can't understand why the Attorney General is focused on his school.

"I don't know specifically what they're investigating, and it just doesn't make a lot of sense to me," he said.
