Elaborate costumes used in ballet production of 'Cinderella'

PHOENIX (CBS5) -

Thursday a fairytale will come to life when Ballet Arizona performs Cinderella.

The production will bring some expensive and elaborate costumes to the stage.

The wardrobe for Cinderella costs about $1 million.

Ballet Arizona rents the costumes from other companies because of the expense.

"The tutus ... they can cost up to $5,000 or more just because of the way that they're made. Handmade. It's layers of tulle and they have to be specifically sewn together to give it that very stiff, ballerina look," said Joseph Cavanaugh from Ballet Arizona.

There is also a room called the "shoe room," where all the point shoes are stored. Hundreds of thousands of dollars are spent on ballet shoes for the entire season.

The 36 ballerinas performing will likely only get one or two performances out of their shoes.

Cavanaugh said they wear out quickly because they are made of satin, canvas and glue. The shoes cost about $90. They are special ordered, but that doesn't mean that once they get to Arizona they are left alone.

"Once the shoe come,s the ballerina will rip it all apart... cut it, sew it back together because she wants it perfect just because it's live theater. You only get one chance and you want everything to be as perfect as possible," said Cavanaugh.
