ELMORE CO., AL (WSFA) -

A $30,000 grant announced by Gov. Robert Bentley will enable Elmore County to make better use of its trails, parks and outdoor recreation areas and in the process boost tourism and economic development.

The Elmore County Commission will use the Appalachian Regional Commission grant to develop a recreation plan to improve and promote its parks, trails, rivers and lakes.

"Alabama's outdoor recreation venues and facilities contribute to our economy and support jobs and quality of life," Gov. Bentley said. "Providing quality recreation draws tourism dollars and can also help attract new industry and new residents to a community."

A steering committee will create an inventory of existing parks and recreation areas, examine the potential for new or expanded areas and develop an overall blueprint for recreation in the county. The committee also will develop marketing plans to promote recreational events and will consider organizing future events as a way to promote tourism.

The county administrator, county engineer and a representative of the Central Alabama Regional Planning and Development Commission will serve on the committee. The effort also will include representation from the county's municipalities, unincorporated communities, Tallassee and Elmore County school systems, non-profit organizations and groups that have an interest in promoting recreation in the county.

Bentley notified Commission Chairman Joe Faulk that the grant had been approved.

The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs administers the ARC program in Alabama along with a wide range of programs that support law enforcement, economic development, workforce development, recreation, energy conservation and water resource management.

Congress established the ARC in 1965 as a supplemental grant program to raise the standard of living, improve the quality of life and promote economic development in portions of the 13 Appalachian mountain states. Thirty-seven Alabama counties, including Elmore County, are part of the ARC area.
