Middle school students tour Plant Vogtle for Nuclear Science Week

BURKE COUNTY, GA (WFXG) -

Employees at Plant Vogtle welcomed local middle school students to the site to celebrate National Nuclear Science Week.

About 50 Lakeside Middle School students toured the plant Wednesday morning.

"We learned about the power plant and how it makes energy and how it splits atoms," Jordan said.

Jordan and his classmates are part of an advanced eight-grade mathematics program, all taking high school math. They explored one of the places responsible for keeping Georgia running.

"We make a lot of electricity," a plant official said. "In fact we make about 20 percent for the entire state of Georgia. We do it very safely - very reliably."

But this wasn't just a show and tell for the students - rather engaging them and encouraging them to consider an education and career in new nuclear technologies.

Plant Vogtle says any group wanting to tour the plant should contact its visitor center at 706-554-9407.
