FBI ranks Toledo 3rd in break-ins nationwide

The Glass City is gracing a Top 10 list, but not one that's getting positive attention.

According to new FBI statistics, when it comes to break-ins in cities nationwide, Toledo ranks third. The numbers represent 2012 and compare the nation's largest cities, viewing how many burglaries they have per capita or based on population.

Toledo had more than 6,700 last year, but police say the numbers show a downward trend for the city. The city has seen a 34-percent drop in the number of breaking-and-enterings since 2011, when there were 8,300. As for the start of 2013, there have been 2,400.

Police say data-driven policing and new officers are helping reduce the numbers.

"What we've been doing has been working. We did struggle for a while there. Again, low manpower levels, harsh economic conditions, those all contributed. But we've been able to build up our manpower, readdress how we've been doing some of our policing in this area, and it's been working," said Sgt. Joe Heffernan with the Toledo Police Department.

Three other Ohio cities made the FBI's Top 10 list: Dayton, Cleveland, and Cincinnati. Number one on the list is Flint, MI.
