AUGUSTA, GA (WFXG) -

A 24-year-old man was taken into custody Tuesday after he took his 2-year-old son hostage at an apartment on Thornberry Drive.

Antonio Riley is facing multiple charges, including false imprisonment, simple battery and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, according to the Richmond County Sheriff's Department.

Deputies say Riley got into an argument with the mother of the child, Shakoria Edwards, around 3 p.m.

The argument escalated and Edwards tried to leave when things got heated, deputies said, but Riley pushed her up against a wall. She told authorities she then heard what sounded like a semi-automatic handgun.

Edwards got outside safely, but Riley locked himself inside with the child and told deputies he would "kill his child if anyone came inside the house." He surrendered after just a few minutes and was arrested.

The baby was not harmed, deputies said.

Deputies later found the gun in a basket under some clothes.

An anonymous neighbor said her sister lives in the complex and they never worried before about letting the kids play outside.

"My niece, she was in school at the time, but she could have been here playing around with the kids and he could have accidentally grabbed her."

Authorities said Riley is a convicted felon. He is also charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He is currently being held in the Richmond County Jail.
