COFFEEVILLE, MS -

(WMC-TV) - The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is helping the Coffeeville Police Department with the case of an officer that was shot late last night.

Around 9 p.m. Sunday, investigators say David Long shot a Coffeeville officer as he responded to a domestic violence call. Officer Kurt Savage was shot four times. He fired back, killing Long.

Long's family is now trying to make sense of the shooting. Meanwhile, Officer Savage is recovering at a hospital in Memphis.

Eugene Horton knew he had to come to his cousin David Long's house after hearing he was shot and killed Sunday night.

"It's sad, it's tragic, and it's taken us through a very difficult time," said Horton.

A woman living with Long went to Coffeeville police with a domestic violence complaint. When officer Kurt Savage escorted the woman to the house, Long was outside in his wheelchair. According to investigators, Long shot the officer four times. Savage returned fire.

"The law, it is what it is. If he did it, then we understand to a certain extent, but we just have to put anything in God's hands," added Horton.

Many people knew both Long and Savage in the small town of Coffeeville. They are torn up about the shooting.

"Officer Kurt is a real nice guy, passes through speaks to you, waves all the time at you," said Kyna Logan, who knew both Long and Horton.

Horton said his cousin and the woman who filed the complaint had been in arguments before, but he never expected this type of ending. He is praying for Savage in the hospital as he and Long's family wait for all the facts to come out in the investigation.

"We don't want there to be any animosity between the families or anything like that, we're just trying to make peace," explained Horton.

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is handling the case for Coffeeville Police Department. Evidence was collected from the home and taken to the crime lab.
