The end of the government shutdown, the election of the newest member of the U.S. Senate and the not guilty plea of a terrorism suspect all made headlines this week.

(RNN) - The House and Senate passed a spending bill that the president signed early Thursday morning, officially ending the government shutdown.

By a vote of 285-144, the House passed a bill Wednesday to keep the government funded through the New Year, setting up another possible budget battle in January. The bill previously made its way through the Senate, where it passed 81-18.

Terms of the deal include funding the government through Jan. 15, 2014, and allow the U.S. Treasury to continue borrowing money through Feb. 7, 2014 - avoiding default.

Newark, NJ, Mayor Cory Booker is the newest member of the U.S. Senate. The Democrat won a special election to fill the late Frank Lautenberg's Senate seat.

An alleged al-Qaida operative has pleaded not guilty to terror charges in federal court. Abu Anas al Libi is accused of playing a role in the 1998 U.S. embassy bombings in Kenya and Tanzania.
