About 1,400 employees of a Savannah River Site contractor are on furlough until further notice due to the government shutdown.
Savannah River Remediation, the contractor that handles liquid waste at the site, notified its employees Thursday that the furloughs would start immediately.
About 360 employees will remain to maintain facilities in a safe non-operating mode, officials said.
Furloughed SRS employees have no specific date to return to work but could be called back with a less than 24-hour notice.
Company officials say furloughed employees can call 725-SITE (725-7483) and visit srs.gov for daily updates on return-to-work information.
