A Martinez man is facing a murder charge after Columbia County deputies say he hit another man across the head, causing him to die.
Deputies say Evans Bernard Walton, 38, hit Donald Blakely, 51, of Harlem in the head around 3:30 p.m. Monday at Applecross Apartments in Martinez.
Blakely fell backwards and hit his head on the concrete sidewalk, according to an incident report from the Columbia County Sheriff's Office. Blakely was taken to the hospital, where he died late Tuesday from his injuries.
When deputies arrived at the scene Monday, a witness told them it was Walton who hit Blakely, according to the report. Deputies found Walton at a building across the street, and he turned himself in.
Walton told deputies that he called Blakely a drunk, and Blakely spit in his face. Walton told deputies he then struck Blakely in the head.
Walton was arrested, charged with aggravated battery and booked at the Columbia County Detention Center. His bond was set at $25,100 on the aggravated battery charge.
The murder charge was added Tuesday after Blakely died. A judge denied Walton bond on the murder charge.
