AIKEN, SC (WFXG) - Tears come to Vicki Allen's eyes as she runs her fingers over pictures of Ashley Kaney and Riley Burdick, Kaney's 8-year-old daughter.
"They'll both be missed greatly," she said.
Pictures on a fireplace mantel in the Aiken house where Kaney and her daughter used to live are all Allen has left to remember the two.
Allen is Kaney's mother's best friend and she says she loved Kaney and Riley like they were her own.
Kaney and her daughter were found dead in separate beds in a house near Charleston this week.
Jacob Philip, Kaney's boyfriend, confessed to investigators Wednesday that he killed Kaney and Riley.
Kaney's autopsy results haven't been released yet. The Berkeley County Coroner says Riley was strangled to death.
Investigators found their bodies after a social worker visited the home when Riley didn't show up at school for two days.
Jacob Philip was arrested Wednesday morning and charged with two counts of murder.
Allen says Kaney worked at a bar near the Naval Weapons Station in Charleston where Philip was a naval student.
Allen says she met him when he visited Aiken with Kaney recently.
She doesn't understand how anyone could take the lives of the two people she calls angels.
"She was just a hard working, single mom and Riley was just a meek, mild, little child that wouldn't bother anybody," Allen, said.
Kaney attended Aiken High School, she moved to Charleston about a year and a half ago.
