A burning cross, a Smith county man beaten and shot by a family member, and in critical condition. We are told this is much more than a family feud, and outraged family members are calling it a "hate crime."
The Bedford community is mourning the loss of a high school freshman. Kelsey Koepfler was hit and killed by a vehicle while walking on the side of the road over the weekend.
A memorial has been set up at the site of the accident, where people have placed a cross, stuffed animals and flowers as they stop by to remember a life lost too soon.
Officials at the Monroe County Sheriff's Office say Koepfler was walking along Whiteford Center Road just after 8 p.m. Saturday when she was hit.
She had just started as a freshman at Bedford High School.
"It's just a very sad and tragic incident," said Bedford Superintendent Mark Kleinhans. "[I've been] talking to the people that knew her. She was just a wonderful kid, wonderful student."
Kleinhans says the district is doing everything they can to help Koepfler's friends, classmates and teachers cope. He says the Monroe County Intermediate School District and an organization called Gabby's Ladder have sent extra counselors to the high school, and they have places set up for the students to share their memories.
"They need support," he said. "They need to be together, they need to be around their friends, and that's what we're setting up."
Many students wore blue Monday in honor of Kelsey, and they are contributing to a memorial Twitter account set up by her friends.
"That's the way kids are," Kleinhans said. "They want to do something, so they certainly are talking, they're planning."
The accident is still under investigation, but so far, the sheriff's office says they don't believe speed was a factor.
A visitation for Koepfler will be held Thursday from 2 to 9 p.m. at the Michael Pawlack Funeral Home on Smith Road in Temperance. A funeral service will be held Friday at 11 a.m. Both are open to all family and friends.
