Dept. of Youth Services employee resigns amid investigation

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

It was the parents of a 17-year old teenage boy who put the Alabama Department of Youth Services on the road to investigate one of its own.

"We had a staff member who resigned," said Allen Peaton, Deputy Director for Administration with DYS.

Allen Peaton says the investigation started in early September. The allegation centered around a 5-year youth services aide. The employee had what DYS considered 'inappropriate communcations' with a former student.

Peaton says the investigation showed no evidence of any physical contact.

"This was electronic communications. During the course of the investigation, the employee chose to resign," Peaton said.

The aide's job duties allowed him to supervise the student. Peaton declined to say whether the employee was forced to quit.

The main campus in east Montgomery has 200 students from all over Alabama. They're considered the older teenagers.. 16 to 18 years old.

"It's a mix of students who are here on delinquent offenses that range from theft offenses to we also have a sex offender treatment unit," Peaton said.

Peaton admitted it's not unusual for something like this to happen but insist it doesn't happen with any sort of regularity.

"It's in their best interest for the staff not to continue contact them once they've left the facility," said Peaton.

Peaton declined to release worker's name.

DYS officials say there is no evidence the employee had his 'inappropriate contact' with the former student from campus. The investigation is now over primarily because the employee resigned.
