MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

One of Montgomery's oldest country clubs is closing its doors. Bonnie Crest Country Club is shutting down. Bonnie Crest sits off Federal Drive just across from the Coliseum in Montgomery.

Built in the 1940s, the club was once a crowded and popular place to go.

"I'm sorry to see it close," says Mack Perkins. He and his wife have lived right behind the Bonnie Crest Golf Course for almost 40 years.

For decades Perkins has enjoyed the view from his backyard. "I live right off the #10 fairway," he says. "I can look out and see the golfers pass."

Perkins calls it "your neighborhood type course" and at one time was a member himself. That was 10 or 12 years ago. From where he stands, Perkins can see he's among many who have stopped paying their dues.

"The last 2 or-3 years, there's been quite a bit of decrease," he admits. "I can look out my backyard and don't see that many."

So he's not surprised that club is closing. "Neighborhoods are changing," but he is looking for some answers.

"Now what?" he asks. "What are they going to do with the property?"

Officials with Bonnie Crest declined to go on camera for an interview, hoping to just close the doors quietly on September 26th. They say the time for Bonnie Crest Country Club has just come and gone.

The club will offer its final tee time at noon, next Thursday, September 26th.
