PHOENIX (AP) -

Changes to Arizona's "resign-to-run" law that took effect last week mean current office holders can now speak publicly about running for another office without having to use wiggle words.

Secretary of State Ken Bennett is taking advantage of that and is now saying he will be a Republican candidate for governor next year. Bennett's comments set off a flurry of social media traffic Thursday when a small eastern Arizona newspaper reported them and added that Bennett would resign when he files official paperwork next year.

Bennett spokesman Matt Roberts shot down that part of the report. He says Bennett won't resign if he files for another office in the last year of his current one and plans to serve out the term.

Bennett spoke at a Constitution Day event in Thatcher Tuesday.
