Fort Gordon officials: No "continuing" threat to post

FORT GORDON, GA (WFXG) -

Fort Gordon has released another statement:

"Civilian law enforcement authorities outside of the local area have

contacted the individual identified as Peter Luu, who was sought for

questioning regarding information Fort Gordon authorities believed

constituted a threat to the safety and security of the installation.  Based

on their report, it has been determined that there is no continuing threat

to the Fort Gordon community.  The safety and security of the Fort Gordon

community is the paramount concern.  In light of the events taking place at

the Washington Navy Yard and similar events around the country, all

indicators of threats to our community must be investigated. We are grateful

for the assistance and support of civilian law enforcement authorities in

resolving this matter."

Update:

Fort Gordon has just issued an updated statement:

"Earlier today, Fort Gordon issued a "be-on-the-lookout" notice regarding an individual named Peter Luu, approximately 20-26 years old. Fort Gordon law enforcement officials are seeking Mr. Luu for questioning in connection with information provided to installation authorities. This information is being considered as a potential threat to the safety and security of the installation. Mr. Luu may be associated with the Marine Corps or Marine Corps Reserve, and may have visited Fort Gordon in recent weeks. Officials do not believe that he is currently on the installation. In addition, Fort Gordon law enforcement officials have informed Richmond County and Columbia County sheriff's offices, and the U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Command has coordinated with the FBI. Fort Gordon law enforcement officials consider him potentially dangerous, and recommend that anyone with information regarding Mr. Luu's whereabouts do not engage with him, but call 911 on Fort Gordon or (706) 791-4380 if calling from off post."

Original Story:

Fort Gordon officials have just released the following statement, after they said a rumor was spread about a shooter on post:

"Despite rumors to the contrary, there has been no shooting incident on Fort

Gordon.  Earlier today, the installation issued a "be-on-the-lookout" notice

for an individual; unfortunately, as that information travelled by

word-of-mouth, it was widely misinterpreted to be a public warning about an

active shooter.  We are working to inform the community that there has been

no incident on Fort Gordon. The be-on-the-lookout notice was issued in an

excess of caution after the installation received information that warranted

further investigation. Nothing is more important than the safety of our

military community."
