Flagstaff approves ban on feeding some wildlife

Posted: Updated:

A new Flagstaff ordinance means residents of the northern Arizona city could face fines or even jail time if they deliberately and repeatedly feed wildlife other than birds and squirrels.

The ordinance approved by the City Council on a 6-1 vote Tuesday is intended to stop feeding that encourages wildlife to enter the urban area and rely on human handouts for food.

According to the Arizona Daily Sun, a first offence would trigger a warning.

Second and third violations within 30 days would be petty offenses punishable by fines of between $150 and $300.

A fourth offense within the next 180 days would be a misdemeanor subject to a fine of up to $500 and up to 30 days in jail.
