NEW YORK, Sept. 19, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Cristie Kerr has a good drive. As a 16-time LPGA champion, she is one of the world's top female professional golfers. But her drive to promote breast cancer awareness is extraordinary as well. Cristie's mother was diagnosed with this condition in 2003. Most daughters might feel helpless, but being the competitor she is, Cristie thought: How can we beat this?
In 2004, Cristie founded Birdies for Breast Cancer, a 501c3 charitable organization that raises money for breast cancer research and treatment, and over the past nine years it has raised more than $2 million for this purpose. Her efforts bore further fruit with the June 2010 opening of The Cristie Kerr Women's Health Center at Jersey City Medical Center; to date, the center has performed over 35,000 procedures.
On September 23, 2013, Cristie is hosting the 9th Annual Birdies for Breast Cancer Celebrity Golf Classic at Liberty National Golf Club in Jersey City. This event will feature an 18-hole celebrity pro-am golf tournament, a post-golf themed spirits and food experience, entertainment, and awards with LPGA stars and celebrity guests. Another of Cristie's brainchildren, it has become the premier celebrity pro-am golf event in the tri-state area. Fireman Capital Partners is the event's Title Sponsor for 2013 and Duff & Phelps is its Presenting Sponsor. Corporate sponsors include Coca-Cola, Audemars Piguet, The Barclays Championship and LibertyHealth. The event will seek to raise over $500,000 for the LibertyHealth Foundation at Jersey City Medical Center.
Celebrities and LPGA professionals who have committed to participate include hockey legend Mark Messier, actor Matthew Settle, Jason Kidd (Brooklyn Nets), Shaun O'Hara (NY Giants), Ken Daneyko (New Jersey Devils), Jerry Foltz (Golf Channel), Morgan Pressel, Natalie Gulbis, Beatriz Recari, Syndee Michaels, Kathleen Ekey, Irene Cho, Sara Jane Smith, Victoria Elizabeth, Sara Brown, Nicole Hage and Veronica Felibert.
"The work we have done collectively to make a difference for women in our community is something I am most proud of," said Ms. Kerr. "I am so thankful for our friends in the private and corporate community for helping in our mission to ensure that all women have access to premium and dignified health care services."
For this year's Celebrity Golf Classic, anyone interested in supporting breast cancer research can make a pledge for his or her favorite team-either "Team Cristie Kerr" or the other teams that are participating in the event. A single pledge can be made by credit card or check, or a specific dollar amount per birdie can be designated. Historically, teams average about 10 birdies during the tournament; when the tournament concludes, pledgers will be notified of the total amount. Pledges are tax-deductible.
