AU unveils new water conservation project

AUBURN, AL (WTVM) -

Intense rainfall in Alabama is the focus of a demonstration project at Auburn University.

The school has created a water conservation demonstration with the hope of educating students as well as the community about the importance of improving water quality.

A 1,000 gallon cistern situated on campus collects rain from the roof of a building and feeds a nearby rain garden.

"It is captured in the cistern and it can hold up to 1,000 gallons and when the landscaping services needs the water they can use it as well as overflow," said Jennifer Morse with the AU Office of Sustainability. "They can also water the rain garden in this area."

In an urban setting, rain runs off into storm drains, collecting pollutants on its way downstream. This system allows a team to capture and slow down the water.

Experts say this method basically produces free water that can be used for anything except drinking water.
