Supporters ask Rutherford schools to replace LGBT posters

MURFREESBORO, TN (WSMV) -

A big battle continues over a poster that supports gay and lesbian students but was removed from the walls in a local school system.

That move sparked some public outcry, but officials still refused to put it back up and now LGBT supporters are fighting back.

The posters identify classrooms as safe spaces for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender students and were hung at Central Magnet School.

The school board voted Sept. 4 to uphold the decision to remove the poster, but supporters of the poster and its message came together Tuesday for a strategy meeting at Out Front on Main in Murfreesboro to discuss how to get the school board to reverse its vote.

The school board's attorney said the issue boils down to a policy that says posters for specific groups are not allowed to be placed inside classrooms. He said free speech does not protect posters hung in the classroom, and that is the source of the controversy.
