Dolphin dies after washing up on Kure Beach

KURE BEACH, NC (WECT) - A six-foot, bottle nose dolphin washed up on Kure Beach Wednesday around 5:30 p.m., according to officials with the UNCW Marine Mammal Stranding Program.

They say the immature male dolphin was alive when it washed up, but died on it's own while the veterinarian was on the way to the beach.

Officials still don't know what caused the mammal to wash up or why it died.

Samples have been sent out to various labs. One of the things they will be looking for is to see if the dolphin had morbillivirus. The virus is similar to measles in humans or distemper in dogs. It has killed hundreds of dolphins from New York to the Outer Banks.

The results should be back sometime next week.

Officials with the Marine Mammal Stranding Program say they are grateful for all of the beach goers and other witnesses who were on the scene and helped out.
