A 44-year-old man is charged with stealing $6,000 worth of copper wire from the Augusta Regional Airport, according to the Richmond County Sheriff's Office.

Investigators arrested Jefrey Larry West Thursday. They say he stole a 500-pound wooden spool with 4,500 feet of insulated copper wire while he was working as a temporary employee at the airport.

The investigation started on Aug. 6 after the Director of Aircraft Services and airport maintenance employees came to work and noticed the spool of wire missing, according to the sheriff's office.

West is accused of selling the copper wire to a local recycling center.

He was booked at the Richmond County Jail and charged with a felony count of theft by taking.
