Waynesboro Police were called to W 11th St early Saturday morning, where they found a body of 53-year-old Mary Lee Crumbley, according to the Burke County Coroner.
The body was close to the Perfection of Beauty salon. Owner Breana Jones said she couldn't believe it.
"It is very hurtful, to me, because it could have been one of us, being so close to us," Jones said. "It's very hurtful that someone lost a family member today."
Tasha Jones is a friend of Crumbley. She said they two of them were together just a few days and she is shocked.
"It's heartbreaking because I know the family. I've known the family for years and, as a matter of fact, I just picked Mary Lee up and gave her a ride home," Jones said. "We did a little talking and like I said, it's a tragedy; the way she had to die."
Exact details of how Crumbley died is still being looked into but there is some suspicion of foul play.
"We don't know the cause or manner of death," said Augusta Palmer, Waynesboro Police chief. "We're just trying to determine what happened. It's very early in the investigation."
People in the area said this is an unusual case and it's generally a safe area.
"It's very safe and by us being here every Saturday from 5 o'clock in the morning and nothing's happen like this, it's pretty safe," Breana Jones said.
Waynesboro Police confirmed an unidentified body was found on the 100th block of W. 11th street in Waynesboro.
The Waynesboro Police and Fire Department and GBI were called to the scene.
