WINTON PLACE, OH (FOX19) -

A local run in honor of a man who laid down his life on September 11, 2001 has found a way of turning tragedy into hope.

Stephen Siller, a husband and father of five, was off-duty and on his way home from his firehouse in Brooklyn when he heard the World Trade Center had been hit. He strapped on 65 pounds of gear on his back and raced on foot towards the site.

He never made it home.

The Tunnel to Towers 5K Run/Walk retraces Stephen's heroic footsteps and honors all those lost on 9/11.

Locally, a race is being held at Spring Grove Cemetery on Sunday, September 8. Proceeds will benefit an Ohio veteran whose life was changed forever.

"Kyle is a triple amputee, and it's the least we can do to give back to him because he's given so much for us," said Runnel to Towers 5K Director Randy Payne.

The money will be used to finish a smart home for Kyle Hockenberry. The home is specially equipped to help him navigate easily and will have a physical therapy room on site so he can continue to rehabilitate.

To demonstate Stephen Siller's run from the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel to the towers, many firefighters will sport full turnout gear weighing up to 60 pounds.

The willingness of complete strangers to endure the run in full gear exemplifies the universal bond between firefighters.

All are welcomed and encouraged to participate in the Tunnel to Towers 5K Run/Walk. You can register at www.t2trun.org/cincinnati.
