BGSU groups hope to avoid more sexual assault

BOWLING GREEN, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Bowling Green Police are investigating what led to the alleged rape of a woman by a BGSU student, and campus police and sexual assault support groups are working together to make sure it doesn't happen again.

Police were called to an off-campus house early Sunday morning, where an unconscious woman was laying in the front yard. Police say the woman was intoxicated beyond the ability to give consent, and later arrested 20-year-old William Jackson on one count of rape.

Students say this is a horrible way to start the school year.

"Based on the types of parties that go on in those houses, I would say that I kind of expected it, almost," said Chip Ratcliff, a BGSU student.

Police crime logs show they investigated 17 different cases of underage drinking that same day.

"Typically, alcohol is a major factor in a large majority of our cases," said Captain Michael Campbell of the BGSU Police.

In 2009, there were four sexual assaults reported by the university. In 2010, there were two. Just a year later, that number jumped to 12 cases. Sexual assault support groups say more people are reporting what's happening, and they're turning that information over to the police.

"No one deserves to be sexually assaulted, and so it does come back to the issue of gaining consent," said Faith Yingling, director of BGSU Wellness Connection.
