AUGUSTA, GA (WFXG) -

Late Tuesday night residents in Dogwood Terrace said they heard gun shots firing in their neighborhood. Deputies said Charlie Davis, 31, was gunned down on 2nd Street and Old Savannah Road.

Kelvin Newman lives on this corner, and said he was at the scene after it happened.

"My brother was going to the store, when a couple of guys were trying to rob him, but he took off in the alley," Newman said.

Witnesses said Davis was running down this alley near 3rd Street when the suspects shot him in the leg; the bullet hitting an artery. Deputies said he ran another block before collapsing. He was rushed to the hospital where he died from his injuries. Davis' friends said this was the third time some tried to rob him.

"He wasn't a bad person or anything like that," Newman said. "He was just a good guy...you know, I don't know why they did him like that."

Now neighbors in Dogwood Terrace plead for the violence to stop in their community.

"The killing will continue going on until somebody puts a stop to it. You know I wish everybody would stop killing each other, and get along with each other and love each other," Newman said.

This is Richmond County's 13th homicide of the year.
