Wileatha Penda Brown, 40, was killed in an early morning crash on U.S. 431 and Alabama 169 when her Suzuki Forenza was struck by a semi-truck.

Superintendent William Green recalled one of his first meetings with Russell County High School teacher Wileatha Brown. He interviewed her looking for someone capable of taking the Science department to a new level.

"Graduated from the University of Michigan, had gone to Tuskegee University and got her Masters, I think, and was teaching in California and were able to recruit her back to Russell County," Green said.

Brown accepted the job and would commute from Montgomery. Wednesday morning she was heading into work early, like normal. While attempting to cross Highway 431 onto 169 her car was hit by 18-wheeler, killing Brown instantly.

News quickly spread to the school, and then to students.

"Many students were kind of upset. Anytime an adult or teacher dies or gets killed it's a little bit tragic for students and for personnel," Green said.

Russell County High School Principal Ken Britford was too distraught to speak on camera, but did say that Brown was an asset to his faculty and would be missed by faculty and students.

Green encourages students to be vocal during this difficult time and express their feelings and band together and honor their fellow warrior.

"It's important that our parents talk with our children. Let their children express themselves and get those feelings out, so that grief is not bottled up inside," Green said.

Brown leaves behind a five year old daughter.
